Let’s face it, everyone does dishes. At least everyone should be doing dishes! Here’s a couple of reasons why:
Doing dishes is actually good for your brain
The act of washing dishes has been proven to reduce stress, provide a mental reset, engage your senses and increase inspiration. If you hate dishes and avoid the act of washing them, just try it. If you don’t enjoy the process at least you will have a huge sense of accomplishment when it is done!
Keeping things tidy
You might not know me very well yet, but I am a lover of all things orderly. I hate a mess. I NEVER leave dirty dishes in my sink and I don’t own a dishwasher (don’t worry, I’m not here to convince you to do all your dishes by hand). Although I do find satisfaction in doing dishes, my main reward is that the house is tidy and I’m not attracting bugs.
Reward of doing dishes immediately
It’s obviously easier if you wash dishes right away while you are cooking or right after you are done eating because food doesn’t have a chance to harden on the plates and require excess scrubbing. But the real reward is that you don’t have a growing pile of mess – something you have to come back to later. Your work is done and you can relax.
Methods
I’ve been training my kids since they were tots to help out with dishes. They’re completely used to it, and really don’t mind most of the time. But if that isn’t how you grew up, here’s a few thoughts:
Do dishes as you cook.
Are you done with that pot? Go ahead and wash it while you’re waiting for something else to finish baking. Avoid a big pile-up of dishes to clean up after the meal when you are ready to rest.

Ok, so this sponge soap dispenser is probably my most favorite kitchen invention. You will be speed washing and saving soap all at the same time.
I’m a huge fan of a basic dish rack like this one. I’ve tried a lot of different types but this one is just the perfect staple and holds a ton. (Did I mention I usually let my dishes air dry?) Wash and let the dishes dry while you cook!

Make Dishes Fun
So practical is great, but there’s nothing that should keep you from making dishes fun! Listen to your favorite energetic music or catch up on an educational podcast while you scrub a larger load. Then your brain can learn and relax at the same time!

Besides being practical, I think these scrubby sponges are so fun and cute that they should make everyone actually get excited about dishes.
Not sure what scent would make the dishes brighter for you, but this lemon verbena dish soap is definitely a lovely scent!

It seems I’m pretty passionate about dishwashing, and I hope that a few of these tips help you to brighten the simple everyday task of washing dishes.
